How to calculate TikTok engagement rate

Follower count says little. Engagement on recent videos tells you if anyone is watching. Here is how to measure it for many creators at once.

Short answer

Engagement rate is (likes + comments + shares) divided by views, averaged over recent videos. The TikTok Creator Comparison actor computes it from each creator's last 50 videos and ranks them, with median views, posting pace and viral post count.

A real use case

An agency has five creators shortlisted for one paid slot. Two have more followers, but the comparison shows the smaller creator has 6.8% engagement and twice the median views per follower. The agency books the smaller creator.

Step by step

  1. List the creators as handles or profile URLs.
  2. Pick how many recent videos to score (30 to 50 is a fair sample).
  3. Run. You get a ranking row per creator and a Markdown report.
  4. Compare engagementRatePct and medianViews, not followers.

Input (paste into the JSON tab)

{
  "handles": [
    "@studio.bloom",
    "@clay.daily",
    "@glaze.girl",
    "@kiln.notes",
    "@mugs.by.mia"
  ],
  "videosPerProfile": 50,
  "includeReport": true
}

What you get back

{
  "resultType": "creatorRanking",
  "rank": 1,
  "username": "studio.bloom",
  "followers": 184200,
  "engagementRatePct": 6.8,
  "medianViews": 41000,
  "viewsToFollowersRatio": 0.22,
  "postsPerWeek": 5,
  "viralPostCount": 3
}

Trimmed example. Names and numbers are illustrative; your run returns real data with more fields.

Tips

  • Median views beats average views. One viral video inflates the average.
  • viewsToFollowersRatio under 0.05 often means an old or bought audience.
  • Set a historyDatasetName to track the same creators month over month.

What it costs

$0.50 per 1,000 videos scored. 5 creators × 50 videos cost about $0.13.

Plus a small per-run start fee. Apify's free plan includes monthly credit, enough to test. Check the listing for current pricing.

FAQ

What is a good TikTok engagement rate?

It depends on size. Smaller creators usually score higher. Compare creators of similar size in the same niche rather than against a fixed number.

Why use views instead of followers?

TikTok shows videos to non-followers. Views reflect who actually saw the video.
