How to

How to get a recipe from a TikTok video

Cooking videos move fast and rarely list amounts. Paste the link and get the recipe written out.

Short answer

Paste the video URL into the Recipe Extractor. It reads the captions, the spoken words and the cover image, follows recipe links in the caption, and returns structured JSON: title, ingredients with amounts, steps, and optional nutrition.

A real use case

A recipe app lets users save TikTok recipes. Each saved link goes to the actor through the API, and the app shows a clean ingredient list and steps in metric units.

Step by step

  1. Paste cooking video links (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube) or recipe pages.
  2. Pick units: original, metric or US.
  3. Optional: translate the recipe, add nutrition.
  4. Run and read the recipe object.

Input (paste into the JSON tab)

{
  "urls": [
    "https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.nora/video/7447547249720053000"
  ],
  "units": "metric",
  "includeNutrition": true
}

What you get back

{
  "status": "ok",
  "recipe": {
    "title": "Garlic butter pasta",
    "ingredients": [
      {
        "item": "spaghetti",
        "quantity": 200,
        "unit": "g"
      },
      {
        "item": "garlic",
        "quantity": 4,
        "unit": "cloves"
      }
    ],
    "steps": [
      "Boil the pasta.",
      "Melt butter with garlic."
    ]
  },
  "overallConfidence": 0.92
}

Trimmed example. Names and numbers are illustrative; your run returns real data with more fields.

Tips

  • overallConfidence flags recipes where amounts were guessed from the video.
  • Repeat URLs come from cache, so popular recipes are fast.

What it costs

$30 per 1,000 recipes, so $0.03 per recipe.

Plus a small per-run start fee. Apify's free plan includes monthly credit, enough to test. Check the listing for current pricing.

FAQ

What if the video never says the amounts?

It uses on-screen text and linked recipe pages first. When amounts are missing everywhere, the confidence score drops so you can spot it.
